Lime wash is basically lime putty that has been watered down and can be easily applied to various surfaces. The slaked lime putty can be applied with the natural hue, or just about any color can be added to the lime-washing before the actual application. Because the typical lime wash contains small calcite crystals, the finish of the wash will often seem to provide a slight glow in open light.
Glazing, Layered Glazing, Embedded Glazing
Glaze refers to a substance that is thinned to create a transparent or translucent film of color over a painted surface, to produce blended effects of their colors. Diluting any paint substance, tinted varnish or tinted water can produce a glaze. Layered glaze is glaze applied on top of previously dried glaze to give it depth. Embedded Glazing used in a Decorative Finish is the style of getting glaze to embed itself into the base layer to achieve a deeper and more organic feel. It adds an extra dimension to any Decorative Finish.
Some Glazing techniques
- Rag on/off
- Rag rolling
- Sponging
- Stippling
- Striee glazing
- Dragging techniques
- Pouncing techniques
Finishing technique using thin layers of plaster applied with a spatula or trowel and then burnished to create a smooth surface with the illusion of depth and texture. Simply stated, Venetian Plaster is an ancient building material that originates with lime and marble. Lime can be finished to be smooth to the touch or to have a high polish, low polish, or matte finish. It can also have a granular texture.
Basic and advanced distressing and aged finishes
In the decorative arts, this is the activity of making a piece of furniture or an object appear aged and older. There are many methods to produce an appearance of age and wear.
The finish called verdigris (sometimes spelled "vert-de-gris", meaning the "green of Greece") is the color copper and bronze turn when exposed to moisture and/or time. (Think Statue of Liberty.)
Patina is a film on the surface of bronze or similar metals (produced by oxidation over a long period of time), a sheen on wooden furniture produced by age, wear, and polishing, or any such acquired change of a surface through age and exposure. On metal, patina is a coating of various chemical compounds, such as oxides or carbonates formed on the surface during exposure to the elements (weathering). Patina also refers to accumulated changes in surface texture and color resulting from normal use of an object, such as a coin or a piece of furniture, over time.
“Marmorino” means “little marble” and gets its name from the powdered marble that gives the finish its unique consistency. This allows for creation of a seemingly endless range of textures and aesthetic effects. It also contains slaked lime for cohesion, improved workability and moisture resistance, and a blend of polymers for enhanced adhesion and durability. Slaked lime finishes age well, gaining in beauty and strength with time.
These include any finishes that resemble a centuries-old look for walls or furniture.
Dimensional and textured stenciling
Dimensional and textured stenciling is stenciling with a twist. Instead of the flat, one-dimensional stencil applications usually seen, this is a cross between sculpture and stenciling.
LusterStone is an architectural coating that produces reflective, stone-like patterns. This product is used to create a stunning variety of high/low dimensional finishes. It combines the properties of a plaster with a soft metallic glow. The color palette of this material is endless.
Metallics include elegant, subtle metallic basecoats for the interior design and architectural trade. Some metallics are so rich they can stand by themselves or they are used as a basecoat for a variety of sophisticated and dramatic finishes.
This is a paint effect used to resemble the grain and flecking of real wood. Graining patterns and colors include mahogany, burl, cherry, walnut, oak, rosewood, Macassar ebony and satinwood.
Marbling remains one of the classic and sought after decorative finishes. Finishes appear similar to Carrera, Yellow Sienna, Travertine, Norwegian Rose and Serpentine. This is done by coating a surface to give a veined or mottled appearance, as is seen with real marble and stone.
Raised textures, cracked plaster, broken plaster
This technique makes walls appear to be crumbling from age, but it's actually a plaster texture, glaze and skip trowel finish.
Finishes can be decorative, worn, chipped, crackled, aged, classic and 'antiqued.'
Decorative Finish matching of Wallboard/Switch plates/air vents, etc.
Finishes are specifically created to match walls, counters, floors and other surfaces.
